TED talk responds and questions

I found these two TED talks interesting. I had no clue what Big Data was until watching these videos. I got out of  these TED talks what Big Data is and that it is good and bad for many reasons. In the first video ‘Big Data is Better Data’  I found it so interesting but crazy scary that the computer was able to find 12 tell-tale signs of the breast cancer, versus that the medical books only found 9 tell-tale signs. Being a pre-med student and knowing that Big Data can help the medical field is great. The connection Big Data has to the medical field is one of the good reasons for it, in my opinion. In the second video ‘Your social media “likes” expose more than you think’ I found the story about the Target sending a teenager the flyer for baby products interesting. Knowing that they tract what you do online and everything you do is scary. Its amazes me that they were able to find out that she was pregnant due to what she was buying. Knowing she was not buying baby clothes but rather she was buying more vitamins then she was and a larger hand bag, it shocked me they could figure it out. I want to know Who collects Big Data, is there a company that collects it? I also would like to know how much does Big Data have on everyone and how much can they access about someone?

  1. Hi, Victoria,
Through your readings this week, you will learn a lot more, but the short answer is that many companies collect our data. Most recently there has been debate regarding the rights of Internet providers to sell our big data. We’ll talk more in class. Thanks for your post!
